Chili is one of my favorite meals! Especially during the cold Maine winters, I can't get enough. A friend recently gave me a great tip on giving your chili a little flair; you grate sweet potato into your favorite chili recipe as its simmering and it blends deliciously into the chili with an added sweetness. I can't believe I waited until today to try this; it was so yummy!! If you don't have a go-to chili recipe or need a new one, here is mine:
1lb ground turkey
1lb turkey sausage (sweet Italian)
1 medium sweet onion chopped
1 glove of garlic mined
3 peppers (I use yellow, orange, and red)
3 cans of diced tomato's (roughly 43.5 oz total)
1 can of tomato sauce (15oz)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons chili powder (give or take depending on your taste buds)
1 can light kidney beans (15oz)
1 can dark kidney beans (15oz)
*half a medium sweet potato grated (optional)
**You can also substitute with 1lb ground beef and 1lb pork sausage
Brown the ground turkey and turkey sausage (removed from the casing). Then add chopped onions, garlic, & peppers until soft. Add in diced tomatoes and tomato sauce and chili powder, cinnamon, cocoa & sweet potato. Simmer on low for at least an hour. Add in beans and simmer for another 20-30mins. I serve with a little bit of sour cream and cheese for those that do dairy...(for me its straight-up) with cornbread on the side (yum)!
