I feel like I'm tempting fate by writing this post, and probably not the best idea before traveling on a plane :-) But knock on wood, I'm honestly so thankful and relieved that our family has had such a healthy winter! Last winter was the complete opposite. My older son caught every possible germ from school, and both my husband and I got the illness without fail. My poor little guy was such a regular in the ER they knew him by name; his collection of teddy bears the hospital gives out was out of control .... He couldn't catch a break from the croup and breathing problems which have lead to an official Asthma diagnosis, and at the end of the winter he started getting seizures. I tell you this not to complain, because trust me, I realize in the grand scheme of things we are very lucky. I'm telling you this as a comparison to how far we've come. Somehow this winter we escaped most of the yucky stomach bugs and the never-ending colds; my older son had not missed a day of school (for health) and my little guy has had no visits to the ER (huge win)!
Yes, this is likely part luck, but it certainly can't hurt that we've been working at keeping the kids healthy, and we definitely don't live in a bubble (that's one thing I don't think I could manage :-)! This winter we've taken a much more proactive approach. We're moving towards a better diet (not that its ever been bad)..just cutting out processed when possible and a few modifications, we've been good about everyone getting their vitamins, fish oils, probiotics etc.. and my little guy after much consideration and research is on a preventative nebulizer and hasn't had a breathing issue since October. And, after a bad little bout this fall he has also been seizure free since Halloween and we've been able to avoid the powerful seizure meds. For our little guy, we see an internal medicine specialist who has helped us put all the pieces together, maintain the right supplements, diet etc... For myself, I am also a huge fan of Acupuncture, I find it to me such a calming and rejuvenating experience (but this can be a post in itself) :-).
Something else that we've been doing consistently that I'm confident is having a positive impact is getting regular Chiropractic Adjustments for the family. I know this isn't for everyone, but its been great for us. Its amazing what removing the interference can do to heal your body. Check out the About Chiropractic Page on Coastal Wellness' site. for more information on Chiropractic care.
Our family goes to Coastal Wellness Family Chiropractic in Cape Elizabeth. We mainly see Dr. Janel Voelker, D.C., C.A.C.C.P. who is certified in Pediatrics (which was important to us). Remember that everyone's choices for their family's health are personal. I realize some of the choices I've made might not be something you agree with, but keep in mind that we all make choices with a lot of thought and our family's best interest in mind. This is not me pushing our choices on anyone, rather simply telling our story and experiences. I'm hoping this can be always be a judgment free zone
