Earlier this week I went to a parenting consult/class at True North, a local health center where Kathryn Landon-Malone, RN, MSN, PhD, CPNP teaches “Parenting from the Heart.” Some of you are probably now rolling your eyes and wondering why… :-) Well I didn’t sign up for this because I think I’m a bad parent, I actually think I’m a decent parent, I did this because everyone has something to learn and trust me, I have lots of room for improvement. What really sparked my visit though was feeling like I’m getting nowhere with correcting bad behavior (i.e. pushing brother and tackling the dog) and discipline…. I have two active and energetic boys, and I honestly needed some guidance … Anyway, this was just what I needed; sometimes you just need a little help!
I really can’t say enough good things about my 90 minutes Kathryn. Not because I’m instantly a better parent, but because I have some new tools/an approach to help me, and because I have a renewed attitude and outlook that’s helping me stay calm and
confident and not aim for perfection. One thing that she reiterated and I have to share is that we are not aiming for perfection. We’re aiming for good enough. It’s the 80/20 rule; you aim to get it right 80% of the time. I just love this and I love that she said it to me… thus why I’m saying it to you.
We often hold ourselves to crazy standards, and it flusters us (me) when our kids are not behaving the way we want them to… Anyway, I’m telling you this because it’s Friday and I’m sure we’re all a little tired, so I really just wanted to remind everyone (as I needed the reminder) that 80/20 is good enough! That's what I'm aiming for :-)
